God’s people must behave differently than the countless outbursts of anger all around us. In this season of anger, leading to murder, let us as believers demonstrate the calling of Christ on our lives.

Where are all the events of Canada leading us? Where are we going? The book of Revelation has something very important to say to Canadian Christians at this hour.

I must begin with a confession. I have very rarely listened to the music of Prince. It is for no other reason than the fact that my musical tastes don’t lend themselves well to the kind of music he was known for. But having said that, I am not unaware of how popular and loved he was. His sudden passing at the age of 57 has shocked many in the musical world. How should a Christian respond to his death? Prince is a musician who is difficult to understand. He became a Jehovah’s Witness in the early part of the millennium. His lyrics, as I understand them, are a combination of his own spiritual quest and very highly sexualized experiences that seem complex. At one time, says Rolling Stone Magazine, he presented himself as an androgynous sexaholic. He could speak of the virtues of celibacy, and at the same time extol the virtues of incest. He was a man who wrote both pornographic lyrics and also a man who called the cross of Jesus the only hope in a world of darkness. Clearly, he was a complicated man. But putting that matter aside for a moment, almost all agreed that his musical and artistic abilities were exceptional. His ability to not only write, but to perform, and to re-invent his music is truly a testament to both his brilliance and very hard work. Reading the many biographies of his life reminds me of three very important biblical truths. The first is that even while human beings are desperately fallen and estranged from God, still the image of God remains. Well, I’m back! After a long, 18 hour flight home, I stumbled through the door of my home, bleary eyed and tired. My dear wife greeted me, and I fell into her loving arms. It was wonderful to be home. Thank you Lord! But I knew that once I gained my bearing, I needed to write down some of the lessons learned before the memory of them faded. And so, let me share those with with you. For me, the chief lesson is not to be thankful for all the good things we have in Canada. Indeed, thankfulness has not even made it to my list of things to remember. I have tried to make worship and the practice of gratefulness a part of my life. I don’t feel I need the experience of witnessing poverty and overcrowding to remind me of appreciating what I have been given. But there are indeed lessons that overwhelm me. First is the overwhelming sense of millions of people who have never heard the saving message of Jesus even once. Standing on a sidewalk in Hyderabad, looking down a crowded street in which thousands of people passed by every minute, left me overwhelmed with the human plight. If the gospel is indeed true – that apart from Christ there is no remission of sins – then I find myself overwhelmed and profoundly convicted by my complacency over the eternal future of countless millions. Failing to respond to the crisis of the hour is a great sin indeed.
