Bad theology and worship music has been debated for many years. What makes a worship song bad? Are we just being lazy by accepting what is presented to us from Christian worship leaders without checking the Biblical truth behind the lyrics? Worship leader and musical artist, Michael Gungor, recently announced that he can no longer believe in God. Since I hadn’t heard of him, and since I have been a critic of the lyrics of some of the new Christian music, I set out to read Michael Gungor’s lyrics. I must confess, what I found is what I expected. Gungor’s lyrics are not filled with heresy, but neither are they filled with orthodoxy, either. Indeed, I think it reasonable to say that Gungor’s lyrics don’t have enough content in them to be accused of heresy or orthodoxy. They are “happy thoughts.” Consider some the words of his song “Brighter Day”: At the start there was love And life began in Him Creation falls, creation gives The promise of a better day We are not there yet Let it come, let it come in Love is here, love is coming Heaven is breaking open Heaven is breaking open Now, I believe that these words are both nonsensical and have absolutely nothing to do with either the Gospel or the Bible. I don’t think any thinking Christian has even the slightest idea of what Gungor is saying, or that it is even vaguely meaningful. Other songs by Gungor have a more vague Christian sense, but not in any defined way. In his song, “Beautiful Things,” Gungor constantly repeats that “You make beautiful things out of us.” Which beautiful things? Is it that we were created in His image, and that the image has been bent and twisted by the fall? Is it [...]
I had a remarkable experience the other day. I have been on the road for some time, preaching both in southern Ontario and in southern Manitoba. While in Manitoba, Martin and Valerie Harder graciously allowed me to stay in their home. Martin is the mayor of Winkler. It was evening, and the Harders informed me they were attending the opening of the newly renovated Canadian Tire store in the city. As mayor, I would imagine this is standard fare for him. The store is now much larger, and for a smaller prairie community such as Winkler, the opening of such a large store is an obvious reason for both pride and thankfulness for investing into the local economy. I told the Harders I was delighted to tag along with them, wanting to witness this clear expression of local civic advancement. What followed was entirely surprising. Indeed, I must say, I have never seen anything like it before. The official opening was still one day away, but on this day, the mayor, local MLA, police officials, fire department, employees who had worked on the building and numerous other city officials gathered to celebrate. The mayor made a wonderful speech about investing in the local economy. Clearly, it was a good day. But then, the store manager stepped to the platform for his speech. It all started innocently enough. He thanked people who had helped him in his career. He said that when he died, he didn’t want to be remembered as the best store manager in town. He wanted to be remembered as both a loving and faithful husband to his wife and father to his children. “But, above all,” he said, “I want to be remembered as one who faithfully followed my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” Not ashamed of Jesus I [...]
I am thankful that the great God of heaven knows my name and I am thankful that He protects me and will favor me for all eternity.
Our God is altogether delightful and our God protects those who are His own.

Christ died for us means that our sins are paid for. The great cost of sin has been paid in the currancy of the blood of our precious savior. God’s justice has been satisfied in the cross.

No one believes unless he or she is more concerned with pleasing God than pleasing man. All of us must come to terms with this.
But when Jesus speaks to the spiritually dead He spoke to people who had been until that moment, unresponsive to God.

Jesus was not like the proverbial used car salesperson who tells you whatever you want to hear without dealing with the tough stuff. A genuine encounter is not afraid to deal with the truth of God even when it is hard to hear.
There are so many lessons to be learned from John chapter 4. But today I want us to see a portrait of Jesus. The one who reaches out to us in our alienation from God.
How does any man or woman pray 'Lord let there be less and less of me and more and more of you?' I think the answer to that has everything to do with just how great you think you are and just how great you think Jesus is.
I think that many people never give themselves to what is important in life, because they can’t! To be brutally honest about it, their ego or their pride gets in the way.

When you are born again, or born from above or born of God you will overcome sin and you will be protected from Satan himself. This is indestructible life. It is indestructible because God has placed His life inside of you.
He didn’t come to make admirers. He never came to be a superstar or to seek popularity. He came to transform the human heart.
Human beings will always worship. That’s because your heart was created to worship something or somebody that is greater than yourself. We are all driven to bow down and offer our lives to something greater than ourselves.
According to John’s recounting of Jesus, and the reaction He created in people, John wants us to know that there is believing and then there is really believing. We’ll talk more about that when we study that text in detail today.
The book of John is a book that tells the story of the life of Christ. But it is a unique book. We'll learn why in today's message.
Christians have taken this Psalm about David which celebrates his coronation as king and have rightly pointed out that this Psalm also speaks prophetically of the greatest king who would be a descendant of David. The one to rule the nations
In a world ravaged by sin, Jesus was announcing that He was the great king. His kingdom would destroy not only Satan, wickedness, and sin it would also destroy the effects of sin.
